Spring 2023 Art | mari@macintosh.garden

Older drawings between April and June 2023! An impressively fruitful time for my art! We even have some stuff getting printed out and mailed to people!

A Puppy and a Gamedachi - June 17, 2023

So a couple years back, Caby came up with this idea for magical toy plushies with screen faces called Gamedachis. Cute! But not so much my thing, I thought—until I needed a cute, anthropomorphized representation of the EAQUAL audio quality evaluation program I used on the "Climbing the Family Tree of MP3" page on cammy.somnol. Suddenly, I had a newfound appreciation for Gamedachis and rushed to make my own, loosely based on the Creative Nomad MP3 player from back in the day. (His name is Nomad, and he can harmonize with your music should you set him to. Also, I wish I didn't make his nose so stupidly big, he loses the stoat thing I was going for.)

Because I thought it looked cool, here's an alt of this drawing with only the shading applied to the color mask. Paired with the color filter over top and only Nomad's face and Setter's glasses glowing in the dark, I dunno, I like this one better than the normal version, honestly. Super moody.

Monk Colton - May 27, 2023

The surprise return of Colton! I drew a decent bit over my vacation to see my girlfriend in Wales, and I mean, when you have access to her gigantic, super nice screen tablet, you kinda have to. I took the time to start experimenting with drawing Colton again, Colton being a young raccoon guitarist lad I came up with for Pennyverse (which is all very very old and sad and outdated at this point). Colton was actually one of the first lads I tried drawing back in 2021, before I really started taking it seriously, so it felt like a long time coming.

Anyway, this one popped out of a small sketchpage I did trying to relearn how to draw him. I always saw Colton, if he was from some kinda fantasy world, as being a monk, especially close to the Gods in a world where that means you get kickass magical powers. He doesn't want any of them to feel bad, so he just idolizes them all. I inadvertently gave him the outfit I originally gave Maldwyn, but he has a different set of clothes now and these plain fit Colton better, so it's okay. Ignore the lantern, I just made some shit up.

Miranda - May 5, 2023

Wow, Cammy does adopts??? So this girl was designed by Caby in a batch of adopts based off Beanie Babies. The reference she used didn't come with names or genders, just photos, so this girl was actually a boy cat named Silver. Anyway, I fell in love with her right away, and I couldn't let her go out for adopt, so we turned it into a draw-to-adopt sorta deal. (More excuse to play with that awesome airbrush coloring style!) She looked like a Miranda to me, so I named her Miranda.

In truth, I need to learn how to draw this girl to my satisfaction before I really start doing anything with her. (Maybe she just needs my new eye style, not the first time that's happened.) I do have plans for her though! She'll be the mascot and "head librarian" for the redesigned Somnolescent Archives. Since Caby half-drew her to indulge me, I'm gonna indulge her back by giving Miranda a pair of guinea pigs to look after, a rambunctious shorthair abyssinian named Bennett and a smarter longhair abyssinian named Tweedy. I'm subtle.

Eleven Weeks - April 22, 2023

I've occasionally bought or received items really meant for other Somnolians, and my slow, lazy ass lets them pile up. I have a few musical things that should be going out to dcb, and this Vansire tape was one of them! But given the wait, I didn't want to mail him just the tape, so I drew him his sona out on a brisk little walk! I experimented with airbrushing the color on as opposed to coloring it my normal way, and I genuinely lost my mind as I did it. Was such an exciting moment, and it's such a pleasing effect. I absolutely need to use it more. (The words behind Lince are lyrics to Vansire's "Eleven Weeks".)

Then came the fun part! I actually drew this onto a cassette J-card template that I then printed out on nice cardstock and folded up into the cassette case, around the tape and behind the normal J-card. The result? A tape that looks completely normal on the outside—but then you open it up and you see gift art! I could not stop telling everyone about it, I was so pleased with how it came out, and dcb loved the surprise too. Absolutely going to be including more gift art in future packages, for all of you Somnolians :blobokhand:

Hiking Devon - April 9, 2023

An homage to two things from last year! Last April, I drew Devon doing some plant watering, and also around this same time (to the date, if my records are anything to go by), everyone in the group was doing photo drawovers. I asked Devon to pick me out some photos from Geograph (a big British and Irish photo gallery and geotagging site) and went to work inserting her sona into one of them.

I think this one came out absolutely adorable, and Devon's colors work so well with the warm, filmy colors of the original photo (1998 vintage!). I feel like Devon is such an ideal character to draw as springtime arrives, not sure why. Cat's her usual wanderer, but I feel like Devon suits a nice nature hike even better.

Pick a season!
