“Hhhhaaaaa—FLUNGEY, HELP!” Sophius cried, diving headfirst into the pool without any regard for its depth. Well, surely enough, it was deep—no bottom in sight, but then again, nothing was in sight. As muddy as the surface looked, it had nothing on the irritating sting of minerals keeping Sophius from even opening his eyes. Panicked at the subzero temperatures and failing to feel the bottom of the pool, he thrashed about, hoping one of his movements would bring him back to the surface.
Instead, the surface enveloped him. Breathable air came once more. Though he could open his stinging eyes once more, he still couldn’t see much—only a bit of glow above him where Hademar’s flare bled through the water. Sophius had found himself in an air bubble, one he couldn’t help but awkwardly wriggle inside.
An exasperated voice boomed through the bubble. “I said—go no further.“
“T-the cave! The cave was caving in! T-the cave—“
“Quiet, you—” Hademar caught his tongue, lest something profane slip. “You’ve likely doomed us both.”
Sophius hung his head, ashamed. “…I’m sorry, Hademar.”
Think I’ve broken the barrier. Been a little funny adjusting to all my other work again after the two months I spent on that level, but I got another story done. It’s called “Thylacine in the Sea”, and it involves Sophius, borb’s old Calelira lad. Think of it like a counterpoint to the Sophius story she wrote back in June.
This one’s been two months in the works, and honestly something of an obligation for longer. Last year, I thought to use Discord’s unique structure to host some in-chat quests, and while it sorta worked, I also gave up on Calelira and all three of the quests we tried ended up petering out. Of them, the one with borb (which you can read the incredibly batshit transcript of here) was actually fairly close to being completed. As such, I felt the urge to take the lads from that quest and tie up the loose ends myself.
I’m pretty pleased with how this one turned out. Coming back to the June draft, I was surprised to see how little editing it actually needed; most of what I wrote then is still in this final draft. I’ve also been trying to get back into the mood rather unsuccessfully over the past few days, so getting that giggly, mischievous feeling where I just wanna go ham with the descriptions again was reassuring. As far as how it lines up with the initial quest, it kinda doesn’t. But the initial quest was also utterly batshit, so that’s okay.
Gonna keep trucking along with some of the fantasy furry stuff for a bit until I’m truly back in the headspace. Pennyverse stuff is coming–it better be, given how little I’ve touched it this month.
