Districts Updates

Know what you wanna see, but not sure where to start? Start here.

Districts (originally Districts for Neocities) is a directory of Neocities sites, broken down into categories to make finding sites relevant to your interests easier. Districts sorts sites based on either the topics covered on the site or the interests of the site maintainer. Sites are sorted into up to two separate districts, with the most prominent topics present being weighted most heavily. We also archive the buttons that represent those sites, in case you'd like to link back or just wanna know what you've seen around.

History

Districts was once a dormant URL sniped by dotcomboom. Initially a list of tags based on the old Geocities neighborhoods, this version of the site never went very far.

Around June 2018, shortly after the death of an attempted Hyperlink revival (the webring, not the clubhouse), Districts was envisioned as a modern-day DMOZ—Netscape's open content directory, cataloguing the internet through human editors, rather than robots. While DMOZ is dead (and Curlie stands in its place), the idea seemed perfect for the wonderful mess we as Neocities users add to every day.

At the time, this also went nowhere. This screenshot is all that remains of that prototype.

In August 2018, Lempamo, a former administrator of ours, stepped up to pursue the project, to show that it could be done. Districts finally went live that month, and since then, it has been cleaned up, added to, and given a complete visual overhaul by our team's artist, Capy. Our staff size has increased too, with Cheren and a tiny blue-and-yellow armadillo, Sebastian, joining the fray soon after. On October 12, 2018, Districts officially went public.

Subsequent updates have seen us working with new tech and adding new districts, though our goal remains the same: to obsessively dig up and sort Neocities sites for your viewing pleasure, and to give light to new sites and forgotten ones alike.

Staff

Sebastian

Sebastian

Sebastian is responsible for sorting all of the sites on Districts. Naturally, his job gets hectic, enough that he doesn't even have his own site. When I asked, he muttered something about "being here once is bad enough" under his breath and stormed off.
mariteaux

mariteaux

mariteaux is the project lead on Districts, coordinating efforts and working with the site markup. Outside of it, he's most active as a musician and writer and is head of Somnolescent, the art collective that spawned Districts.
dotcomboom

dotcomboom

dotcomboom is the resident Hot Pocket and efficiency freak for Districts, managing our souped-up AutoSite and JSON-based workflow. Outside of that, he's a hobbyist software developer, putting together various scripts and programs and messing with old tech.
Capy

Capy

Capy is the dweeb who drew all the site graphics for Districts. She's also lead Seb wrangler. You can find more of her art and other interests over at GwtaGacw, in Arles and Petsburg.
Cheren

Cheren

Cheren is the bug-obsessed lead seeker (our elite team of site finders) for Districts. He runs a site dedicated to insects (amongst other things) named bug land, along with a K-pop fansite, viian. You can find them in Petsburg and Tokyo, respectively.
